Volunteer Spotlight: Alys Venable

AlysVenableAlys Venable has been a dedicated tutor to eight learners over the course of her eight years volunteering here at the Nashville Adult Literacy Council.  She has worked with both literacy learners and English language learners in our One-on-One program and Start Now program.  She initially tutored our learners at Davidson County Drug Court, a local rehabilitation center to help individuals in the court system for a drug or alcohol related charge to better their lives.

Besides the friendships that she developed with each of the learners she has worked with, Alys’ favorite part of tutoring with us is what she learned about learning.  She discovered the importance of phonics, and has become a better speller herself.

Alys taught high school English within the Metropolitan Nashville Public School system and middle school English at the University School of Nashville.  Regardless of her years of teaching experience, Alys continues to find better ways to teach our learners.  Her favorite supplemental resources for working with both literacy learners and English language learners has been the Frog and Toad stories and Dr. Suess books.  She has found that although written at a low reading level, these books greatly appeal to adults and are not specific to a certain culture or race.

“Students need confidence,” says Alys.  “Listen to what they need. Do whatever you can to reaffirm them.  Give a lot of praise, and laugh a lot.”

Alys is moving to Colorado this fall, and though we are so sad to see her leave, we could not be happier to have had her serve in our program for so long.  Thank you for your years of service, Alys!

Alys has always been such a great role model to volunteer tutors also. Many of us will miss her diabolical word lists she contributed to the Spelling Bees for many years. I wish her great things in Colorado and I will miss her encouragement.
