NALC Executive Director Gets Seat On New American Advisory Council

February 2, 2015:

NewAmericanAdvisotyCouncilUpon appointment by Mayor Karl Dean, Meg Nugent has taken a seat on the Metro New American Advisory Council (MNAAC).  Nugent joins leaders from Nashville’s immigrant communities, as well as officials in Metro Government, in both building new partnerships and in keeping the lines of communication open between city/county administration and Metro’s newest citizens.

Says Nugent about this newest opportunity of community service, “I am excited to take NALC’s mission to help adults improve their reading and English skills, thereby improving our community, and parallel it with that of MNAAC to engage New Americans and empower them to participate in our government and our community.  I believe the tool set that  NALC has built through our tutoring of literally thousands of immigrants will help to provide good insight into what Nashville can do to support our foreign-born citizens as they build  better lives for themselves and their families.”

Created in 2009 to address the needs of a growing population of Nashville residents who were born outside of the United States, the MNAAC will meet monthly to discuss issues pertinent to this demographic, which currently makes up over 13 percent of Nashville’s population.  In 2012, it was reported that Nashville had the fastest-growing immigration population of any American city, and the years following suggest that this trend continues.
